ALTAR BERLIN ist ein Ritual zur kollektiven Erforschung des Verlustes und der Erinnerung. ALTAR BERLIN ist eine interaktive und partizipative Installation. Künstlerinnen und Berlinerinnen bauen gemeinsam den ALTAR. Er ist ein Reflexionspunkt in der Stadt, wie wir – die Bewohner*innen von Berlin – mit unseren Verlusten umgehen. ALTAR BERLIN bietet nicht nur die Möglichkeit dem Verlust zu gedenken. Es ist auch eine Möglichkeit, diese Erinnerungen wieder hervorzurufen und sich dabei bewusst zu werden, dass sie immer noch mit uns verbunden sind. Die Idee vom Altar ist inspiriert von einer präkolumbischen Tradition, die besonders in Mexiko sehr beliebt ist. Dort erinnert der Altar an die Verstorbenen und bringt sie wieder mit den Lebenden zusammen. Der Tod ist auf diese Weise nicht endgültig und erschreckend.
Wir erforschen verschiedene Formen des Verlustes, wie den Verlust in neuen urbanen Kontexten (wachsende Städte, Einwanderung, Digitalisierung). ALTAR BERLIN ermöglicht, die Erinnerung durch einen aktiven Beitrag zu visualisieren und damit deutlich zu machen, was für alle Berliner*innen wertvoll war und heute in unserer Stadt wichtig ist. In Berlin leben Menschen aus 193 Kulturen. Jede Kultur ist ein Geschenk, eine magische Brücke zu unschätzbaren Geschichten. ALTAR BERLIN ist eine Anregung für den interkulturellen Dialog im städtischen Kontext und für das Bewusstwerden über das kulturelle Kapital, das die Menschen in die Stadt bringen.
PROJEKTGESCHICHTE
ALTAR BERLIN wurde als Schwesterprojekt von Altar Antwerpen geboren. Altar Antwerpen wurde 2011 von der Mestizo Arts Platform initiiert und gehört zwischenzeitlich zur Sammlung des MAS | Museum aan de Stroom (Belgien) wo er ständig weiter entwickelt und jedes Jahr neu präsentiert wird.
Die Idee des Altars für die Städte wurde vom Dramaturgen Gerardo Salinas Salinas (KVS Theater Belgien, MAP) entworfen. Zusammen mit Lucila Guichon wurde im Jahr 2011 der erste ALTAR entwickelt und in Kooperation mit der mexikanischen Botschaft errichtet. Jedes Jahr wurden Künstler/innen aus unterschiedlichen Disziplinen engagiert und auf diese Weise dem Altar Jahr für Jahr neue Elemente hinzugefügt.

ALTAR BERLIN is a ritual for the collective exploration of loss and memory. ALTAR BERLIN is an interactive and participatory installation. Artists and Berliners build the ALTAR together. It is a point of reflection in the city on how we – the inhabitants of Berlin – deal with our losses. ALTAR BERLIN not only offers the possibility to remember the loss. It is also a possibility to recall these memories and to become aware that they are still connected to us. The idea of the altar is inspired by a pre-Columbian tradition, which is especially popular in Mexico. There the altar reminds us of the deceased and brings them back together with the living. In this way death is not final and frightening.
We explore different forms of loss, such as loss in new urban contexts (growing cities, immigration, digitalization). ALTAR BERLIN makes it possible to visualize memory through an active contribution, thus making clear what was valuable for all Berliners* and what is important in our city today. People from 193 cultures live in Berlin. Each culture is a gift, a magical bridge to invaluable stories. ALTAR BERLIN is a stimulus for intercultural dialogue in an urban context and for awareness of the cultural capital that people bring to the city. ALTAR BERLIN was born as a sister project of Altar Antwerp. Altar Antwerpen was initiated in 2011 by the Mestizo Arts Platform and is now part of the collection of the MAS | Museum aan de Stroom (Belgium) where it is constantly being developed and presented anew every year.

The idea of the altar for the cities was conceived by the dramaturg Gerardo Salinas Salinas (KVS Theater Belgium, MAP). Together with Lucila Guichon, the first ALTAR was developed in 2011 and built in cooperation with the Mexican Embassy. Every year artists from different disciplines are engaged and in this way new elements are added to the altar year after year.
